The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has appealed for calm following a viral video circulating on social media showing some Ghanaians protesting and calling for the deportation of Nigerians over alleged misconduct.
In a statement signed by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols at NIDCOM, Dabiri-Erewa strongly condemned the blanket condemnation of Nigerians living in Ghana, describing it as dangerous and unacceptable.
“Nigerians are not criminals. They are good ambassadors wherever they find themselves. The few bad elements should be identified and dealt with according to the law,” she said.
She described Ghana and Nigeria as “Siamese twins,” stressed the importance of upholding peace and unity in line with the spirit of ECOWAS and regional integration.
The NIDCOM boss urged Nigerians living in Ghana not to be provoked or engage in violence, assured them that the matter is being addressed through diplomatic channels. She noted that the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, is actively engaging with Ghanaian authorities.
Dabiri-Erewa also advised against the use of inciting language from either side, warned that such rhetoric could escalate tensions.
She dismissed rumors that Nigerian-owned shops and properties in Ghana were being attacked, stated that there was no verified evidence to support such claims and urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation.
She commended both the Nigerian and Ghanaian High Commissioners for their proactive efforts in managing the situation and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to peaceful coexistence with its West African neighbors.
