The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has called on Nigerians living abroad to remain patriotic and committed to the nation’s development, emphasizing that their contributions are vital to Nigeria’s progress.
Speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the 2025 Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Graduates’ Association (UNIFEMGA) Abuja Iftar/Lecture Prayer, themed “Islam and Patriotism”, Dabiri-Erewa underscored the strong link between faith and love for one’s country.
“As Muslims, patriotism is a core value embedded in our faith. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) demonstrated deep love for his homeland, and as Nigerians, we must embody this principle by working towards national unity, peace, and development,” she stated.
She commended Nigerians in the diaspora for their contributions through remittances, investments, and knowledge transfer, stressing that their unwavering commitment to the country plays a crucial role in shaping its future.
“Our brothers and sisters abroad are among Nigeria’s greatest assets. Their skills, resources, and dedication must be harnessed for sustainable development. No matter where we are, Nigeria remains our home, and we must continue to uplift its image and contribute to its progress,” she added.
The keynote lecturer, Sheikh Abu Mazidatul Khaer bn Saeed, addressed misconceptions about patriotism in Islam, explained that true patriotism involved love and respect for one’s country, its leadership, and efforts to foster national growth.
The event, hosted by Abdur-Rahman Balogun and Prof. Morufat Balogun, attracted dignitaries, including Hon. Justice Joke Adepoju of the FCT High Court and Air Commodore Lukman Lawal, Director of Islamic Affairs, Nigerian Air Force.
The Iftar programme concluded with prayers for the nation and a renewed commitment by attendees to uphold the values of patriotism, unity, and faith-driven service to Nigeria.
Also in attendance were representatives from various organizations, including the Great Ife Alumni Association Abuja, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic Muslim Alumni (MAPAMA), University of Muslim Alumni (UMMA), Ijebu Forum Abuja (IFA), and Abuja Muslim Forum (AMF).
