Concerned leaders of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State have raised alarms over what they described as Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s imminent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a strongly worded press release signed by David Ekiyor, Ochuko Oghenekome, and Ezekiel Chukwudi, the group accused the governor of engaging in high-level discussions with APC leaders, signaling a strategic move to the ruling party.
Titled “2027: Our Leader, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is Assuredly in Transfer Market,” the statement expressed the group’s dismay over the governor’s alleged political maneuvering. “Governor Oborevwori’s actions suggest he is preparing to abandon the PDP, the very platform that brought him to power, in favor of securing a position within the APC,” the statement read.
The group lambasted the governor’s spokesperson, Festus Ahon, and PDP State Chairman, Solomon Arenyeka, for their dismissive responses to the defection allegations, described their defense as weak and disconnected from reality. They accused the governor of risking the future of Delta State by prioritizing personal political ambitions over party loyalty and the electorate’s trust.
A recent trip by Governor Oborevwori to Ghana, allegedly to meet with APC leaders, has further fueled speculation about his defection plans. The PDP leaders questioned the legitimacy and funding of the visit, calling for transparency and accountability regarding the governor’s actions.
The group’s statement highlighted the governor’s sudden move to settle outstanding entitlements of APC lawmakers in the State House of Assembly, interpreting it as a calculated step towards fostering goodwill with the APC.
The concerned PDP leaders urged party members to remain vigilant and proactive as the 2027 elections approach, stressed the importance of safeguarding the party’s integrity and the people’s trust. They warned that Governor Oborevwori’s defection would constitute a significant betrayal and vowed to take necessary actions to protect the party’s interests.
