Defence Headquarters clarifies Vigilante casualties in Zamfara Air Strike, confirms 20 Terrorists neutralized

The Defence Headquarters has clarified details surrounding the recent air interdiction operation in Zamfara State, dispelling misconceptions that local vigilantes were mistakenly targeted. It confirmed that the operation successfully neutralized 20 terrorists in Maraya Village, Maru Local Government Area.

The clarification was contained in a statement signed by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye. According to the statement, the precision air strike was carried out on 31 May 2025, as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle terrorist networks threatening the peace and stability of the North West region.

Following the airstrike, troops of 1 Brigade deployed from Forward Operating Base (FOB) Magami at about 1:11 a.m. on 01 June 2025 to the Maraya/Wabi axis for a Battle Damage Assessment and to conduct a detailed exploitation operation.

“The assessment confirmed that 20 terrorists were neutralized, clearly validating the accuracy and effectiveness of the air operation,” the statement said.

Regrettably, the Defence Headquarters noted that two members of a vigilante group who were in the area to support the operation lost their lives, while two others sustained injuries. It emphasized that the casualties were inadvertent and not a result of misidentification or mistaken targeting by the Nigerian Air Force.

Major General Kangye conveyed the condolences of the Chief of Defence Staff to the families of the fallen vigilantes and extended prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured.

He further assured that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain committed to strengthening coordination with local security outfits and stakeholders to prevent such incidents in the future.

“Our proactive approach aims to enhance the overall effectiveness of our operations while minimizing unintended consequences,” the statement added.

The Defence Headquarters therefore reaffirmed its commitment to defeating terrorism and restoring lasting peace in Zamfara State and across all troubled regions in the country.
