Residents of Edo State have lauded Governor Monday Okpebholo for his swift and effective security reforms, which have made the 2024 Yuletide season the safest in nearly a decade. The commendations was coming as the Governor marked his first 60 days in office, during which significant strides have been made in addressing the state’s long-standing security challenges.
Governor Okpebholo’s administration has been credited with ending inter-cult wars that had claimed over 100 lives between September and early November 2024. His firm stance against cultism and thuggery has brought a much-needed sense of peace to areas previously plagued by violence.
“Governor Okpebholo has shown strong leadership in tackling the security crisis. His decisive action has restored peace to areas that were previously overrun by cult-related violence,” a Benin City resident remarked.
Another resident highlighted the newfound sense of safety, stating, “For the first time in years, we can walk freely without fear. The difference is clear, and we are grateful for his proactive measures.”
The festive season saw a significant reduction in crime, with minimal reports of kidnapping and other criminal activities. The Governor’s efforts in road rehabilitation have also been acknowledged for easing travel across the state. An official from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) noted a decrease in accidents during the Yuletide, attributing it to the Governor’s prompt intervention in repairing critical road networks.
Previously, Edo State, particularly the Benin-Ekpoma Road, had been a hotspot for kidnappings and cult-related violence. A trader along this corridor shared, “Traveling on this road was a nightmare. You could be attacked or kidnapped at any time. But the repairs and improved security presence have made a huge difference.”
In a decisive move, Governor Okpebholo convened a meeting with security agencies on November 19, 2024, just days after his inauguration. The meeting resulted in a directive to intensify the fight against cultism and kidnapping. His administration has since prioritized the repair of key road networks, including the notorious Obadan Junction on the Benin-Ekpoma Road, which has led to a decline in criminal activities and a resurgence in economic activities.
Marketplaces have also benefited from the Governor’s reforms. The ban on market unions and thugs posing as revenue collectors has created a peaceful environment for traders. A market woman in Benin City expressed relief, saying, “We can now do business without harassment or unnecessary fights caused by ticket collectors. The markets are peaceful and feel like a new beginning.”
Residents are optimistic about the future, urging Governor Okpebholo to sustain the momentum and extend his pragmatic approach to other sectors. “We are impressed with what the governor has achieved in such a short time. He should continue to build on this foundation and make Edo State a model of progress and security,” a resident stated.
