The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has commenced an investigation into the death of a 27-year-old woman, Miss Esther Akwaji, who was reported missing before being found dead at a hospital in Abuja.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the FCT Command, SP Josephine Adeh, said a distress call was received at about 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, 22 January 2026, at the Dei-Dei ‘A’ Division from Mr Peter Akwaji, who reported that his sister had left home around 3:00 p.m. the previous day to visit a bank in Dei-Dei but failed to return.
Adeh further disclosed that later that night, at about 10:30 p.m., Mr Akwaji received an anonymous phone call from a man who identified himself as the deceased’s boyfriend. The caller allegedly stated that Esther had visited him at his residence, where he bought her food, after which she began vomiting and was rushed to Kubwa General Hospital, where she was confirmed dead while receiving treatment.
She said police operatives from the Dei-Dei Division immediately proceeded to the hospital, where the body of the deceased was recovered and deposited at the mortuary for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
According to the Police spokesperson, discreet investigations have commenced, while efforts are ongoing to trace and apprehend the alleged boyfriend, who is currently at large.
The FCT Police Command assured members of the public of its commitment to a thorough investigation and to ensuring that all persons found culpable are brought to justice, added that further developments will be communicated as investigations progress.
