Police operatives in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have rescued a mentally challenged woman and her newborn baby after a roadside delivery in Kwali Area Council.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of April 3, 2026, was reported by officers of the Rapid Response Squad who were on routine patrol in Kwaita Village. The officers discovered the unidentified woman shortly after she had given birth to a baby girl along the roadside.
Acting swiftly, the Officer in Charge of the Gender Unit at Kwali Division mobilised her team to the scene, where both mother and child were safely evacuated. They were immediately taken to the General Hospital, Kwali, where they received urgent medical care and were later discharged in stable condition.
Following standard welfare procedures, the authorities contacted the Officer in Charge of Welfare in Kwali Area Council, Mr. Sadiq Kwali. The mother and her newborn were subsequently handed over to him and relocated to the FCT Children’s Home in Wako, Gwagwalada Area Council, where they are now receiving proper care and support.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, commended the officers for their prompt and compassionate response. He noted that the patrol team, despite being male personnel, showed exceptional professionalism in assisting the vulnerable woman and ensuring the safety of her baby before the arrival of the Gender Unit.
He also urged residents to remain vigilant, show empathy, and promptly report emergencies or persons in distress to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines.
The police said the intervention highlighted the importance of community awareness and rapid response in safeguarding vulnerable individuals across the FCT.
