The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) have strengthened collaboration aimed at enhancing national security and improving road safety through comprehensive data integration and identity management reforms.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Corps Public Education Officer of the FRSC, Olusegun Ogungbemide, following a high-level strategic meeting between the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, and the Director General of NIMC, Adesoye Coker.
According to the statement, Mohammed reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to leveraging harmonised national data systems to strengthen security architecture and road safety management across the country. He emphasised the urgent need for robust inter-agency data integration to build a secure and intelligent nation where individuals can be accurately identified, noting that credible identity management remained critical to effective law enforcement, crash reduction strategies, and national planning.
The Corps Marshal commended NIMC for expanding Nigeria’s identity database and strengthening the National Identification Number (NIN) ecosystem, describing it as a cornerstone for improved governance and accountability.
He disclosed that the FRSC is intensifying efforts to adopt and enforce the NIN as a mandatory requirement for vehicle registration and the issuance of the National Driver’s Licence, adding that the move would sanitise the motoring environment and enhance traceability within the road transport sector.
Mohammed also advocated the inclusion of FRSC in NIMC’s Annual Identity Forum, stressing that the Corps serves as a frontline identity management institution through its driver licensing and vehicle registration processes.
In her remarks, Coker pledged NIMC’s commitment to deepening partnership with the FRSC, particularly in data integration initiatives that support crash reduction efforts and broader national security objectives. She commended the ongoing transformation and modernisation within the FRSC, expressing confidence that sustained institutional synergy would deliver significant benefits to Nigerians.
The meeting marked another milestone in the Federal Government’s drive toward establishing a harmonised, technology-driven national identity architecture designed to strengthen governance, promote accountability, and safeguard lives on Nigerian roads.
