Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani-Bello has called for the implementation of weighbridge policy across the country to prevent road damages by overloaded vehicles.
The Governor made the call in Minna the state capital when he played host to the House Committee on Works.
Governor Sani-Bello who expressed dismay over the consistent damages done to roads across the state and in the country at large by heavy duty vehicles called on the House Committee on Works to help in ensuring that the weighbridge is implemented as soon as possible.
“We must maintain weighbridges as a policy. Our roads are designed for 30Tons but trucks plying the roads now carry between 50-70 tons which is over weight. As we fix the roads,trailers and other heavy duty trucks break the roads because the entire trucks going from North to South pass through the state thereby making our roads not to last”.
We have spent money twice on the rehabilitation of Minna-Suleja road and we are still spending.
” We must maintain weighbridge. It is not the number of trucks, if a million truck passes and they are carrying 30tons each,it is not a problem but one truck with 70 tons can damage the road.
“I suggest we look into it otherwise, government will continue to spend money. We have spent money on these roads and we are still spending ” Governor Sani Bello stated.
Earlier,the Deputy Chairman House Committee on Works, Abubakar Amuda Kaniki,had said the roads in Niger State were strategic not only to Nigerlites but Nigerians as well .
He however assured the Niger State Governor of the Federal Government’s intervention to make sure that the failed bridges across the state are fixed within the shortest possible time.
