Medical Strikers FC of Gwagwalada has emerged champion of the maiden edition of the Montage 99.7FM Community Football Tournament after edging past Chidex FC of Bwari 5–4 on penalties in a thrilling final.
The keenly contested showdown was decided on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at the Area 10 Old Parade Ground football pitch in Garki, Abuja. Both sides were locked in a tense battle that ended goalless after 90 minutes of regulation time, with neither team able to convert their chances despite sustained attacking pressure.
The penalty shootout eventually separated the finalists, as Medical Strikers FC held their nerve to secure victory, sparking celebrations among their supporters. The win earned the Gwagwalada-based side the tournament trophy and a cash prize of ₦1,000,000.
Chidex FC, who put up a resilient performance throughout the competition, finished as runners-up and were rewarded with ₦700,000 and silver medals.
The final attracted hundreds of enthusiastic football fans and invited guests, creating a vibrant atmosphere that underlined the growing appeal of grassroots football in the Federal Capital Territory.
En route to the final, Chidex FC defeated Gum FC of AMAC 3–1 in their semi-final encounter, while Medical Strikers FC booked their place in the final with a convincing 2–0 victory over ECN FC at the Kwali centre.
Earlier in the day, the third-place playoff saw ECN FC of Kwali overcome Gum FC of AMAC to secure the bronze medal and a cash prize of ₦400,000.
The 2025 Montage Community Football Tournament featured 24 teams drawn from all six Area Councils of the FCT and ran for over two weeks, highlighting emerging talents and promoting community participation through sport.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, tournament coordinator Mr. Raphael Ekpang described the competition as a major success, noting that its objective of fostering unity and grassroots engagement had been fully achieved.
“Grassroots competition is the way forward for sports development and community bonding,” Ekpang said. “Over the past three weeks, we brought people together from the area council level to the zonal stages, culminating in today’s final. Beyond football, the tournament created opportunities for networking, friendship and unity.”
Individual honours were also presented, with Miracle Ike of Chidex FC named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, while Ibrahim Alhassan of Medical Strikers FC finished as the highest goal scorer with four goals.
