The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Oyo State Chapter, has strongly condemned the violent attacks on Muslims during a masquerade procession in Oyo town, describing the acts as provocative, unlawful, and a threat to peaceful coexistence in the state.
In a press statement released on Monday, MURIC recounted a disturbing incident which occurred on Friday, July 25, during the Egungun Festival outing. According to the group, a masquerader identified as Lobanika publicly assaulted Muslims at Oṣaro Market. The masquerader allegedly removed the cap of an Imam and later attacked another Muslim with a cutlass, leaving residents in shock and fear.
“This barbaric behavior is not only criminal but also deeply disrespectful to the religious rights and dignity of Muslims,” said Amb. Malam Ibrahim Agunbiade, Secretary of MURIC, Oyo State Chapter.
MURIC called on the Oyo State Government, traditional rulers, and law enforcement agencies to take urgent steps to address the growing trend of religious intolerance disguised as cultural celebration.
“Festival organizers and custodians of Yoruba traditions must educate masqueraders and their handlers on the limits of cultural expression in a pluralistic society,” the group stated.
While reports have surfaced regarding alleged reprisal reactions in Ogbomoso by some aggrieved Muslims, MURIC advised against retaliation, urging restraint and faith in lawful avenues for redress.
“Violence is not the answer. We appeal to all Muslims in Oyo State to remain calm and allow the relevant authorities to carry out thorough investigations and ensure justice is served,” Agunbiade added.
MURIC also raised alarm over the scheduled Ololu Masquerade Festival in Ibadan, beginning Monday, July 28. The organisation expressed concern that rising tensions could escalate if proactive measures are not taken by the authorities.
The group therefore urged the Oyo State Government and security agencies to be vigilant and to prevent any further provocation, assault, or breakdown of law and order during upcoming cultural events.
“The security and dignity of all citizens regardless of religion must be safeguarded at all times. We expect the government to act swiftly and decisively,” MURIC emphasized.
In conclusion, MURIC reiterated its commitment to peace, tolerance, and justice, while urging Muslim faithful across the state to continue to be law-abiding.
