The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has applauded the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for organising a sensitisation workshop on digital citizenship aimed at promoting inclusion for persons with disabilities.
Executive Secretary of the NCPWD, Mr. Ayuba Gufwan, represented by the Director of Social Integration, Mr. Lawrence Idemudia, described the initiative as a timely and forward-thinking step towards bridging the digital divide. He noted that the programme aligns with both national and international commitments to accessibility, inclusion, and sustainable development.
“The digital space, when made accessible, can eliminate barriers to education, employment, health, and civic participation,” Gufwan said, adding that information and communication technologies hold transformative potential for persons with disabilities.
The workshop, held on Thursday, July 17, 2025, in Abuja, with the theme “Empowering All Advancing Digital Citizenship and Inclusion for Persons with Disabilities,” brought together policymakers, ICT professionals, civil society actors, and persons with disabilities. Discussions centred on online safety, privacy, ethical conduct, and innovative solutions to foster digital inclusion.
A key highlight of the event was the presentation of braille books by NCC’s Director of Digital Economy, Mrs. Olatokunboh Oleyele, to the NCPWD, received on behalf of the Commission by Mr. Idemudia. Certificates of participation were also issued to attendees.
