The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Zubaida Umar, has commended the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) for the timely release of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), called it a critical tool for strengthening Nigeria’s disaster risk reduction and climate resilience.
Speaking at the public presentation of the SCP in Abuja, DG Umar emphasized that NEMA would immediately use the forecast to activate early flood preparedness and other climate risk management measures across the country. She further disclosed that the agency plans to convene a technical meeting of experts to analyse the predictions and produce detailed guidance on disaster risk implications, alongside actionable recommendations for flood preparedness and mitigation nationwide.
The Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, described meteorological and climate services as essential to national safety and development. He noted that the 2026 SCP offers scientifically robust guidance to inform planning and risk management across key sectors.
Meanwhile, NiMet’s Director-General, Professor Charles Anosike, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to delivering timely, accurate, and reliable climate information to support disaster preparedness and socio-economic development in Nigeria.
