The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has joined the global community in commemorating the International Day for the Right to Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and the Dignity of Victims, urged Nigerians to uphold truth, justice, and accountability.
In a statement issued in Abuja, NHRC Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu emphasized the importance of truth in addressing human rights violations and promoting peace in society.
“As we mark this significant day, we must recognize our collective duty to uphold the truth, seek justice for victims, and ensure that human rights violations do not go unpunished. Many individuals have suffered injustice for speaking out against abuses, and the NHRC remains committed to supporting them and ensuring their grievances are addressed,” he stated.
Dr. Ojukwu highlighted recent cases of human rights violations in Nigeria, stressing the need for effective mechanisms to protect victims and provide redress.
“We have seen incidents that reinforce the need for strong legal and institutional frameworks to address grievances. Many Nigerians are unjustly imprisoned due to false allegations, and it is our responsibility to ensure justice prevails,” he added.
The NHRC boss further called on the government and relevant agencies to work together in fostering a society where human rights are respected, victims are supported, and perpetrators of violations are held accountable.
He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to defending human dignity and ensuring justice for all, urged Nigerians to collectively push for a nation built on truth, fairness, and respect for human rights.
