The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, described him as a dedicated leader who made notable contributions to the advancement of human rights in Nigeria.
In a condolence message issued on behalf of the Governing Council, Management, and Staff of the Commission, the Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, extended heartfelt sympathies to the late President’s family, the Government, and the people of Nigeria.
“President Muhammadu Buhari will be remembered by the Commission for his significant contributions to the promotion of human rights and justice in the country,” the statement noted.
The NHRC highlighted key milestones during the Buhari administration, including the strengthening of the Commission’s capacity through increased budgetary allocations and special intervention funds. The Commission also commended his approval of two landmark policy frameworks the National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights and the National Action Plan for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights as strong indicators of his administration’s commitment to upholding human rights.
The statement further acknowledged the former President’s efforts in tackling insecurity, particularly in the North East, where military campaigns under his leadership helped reduce insurgent threats and facilitated the return of normalcy to affected communities.
“As the nation mourns, we pray the Almighty grants him eternal rest and comforts his family and all Nigerians. May his patriotic service and sacrifices for the unity, peace, and progress of our country never be forgotten,Adieu, Elder Statesman” the Commission added.
