Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting peace and stability in Sudan while advancing stronger diplomatic and bilateral relations between both countries.
This position was restated by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, during a courtesy visit by the Sudanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohamed Abdelaal, at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.
Ahmed highlighted the longstanding historical and cultural ties between Nigeria and Sudan, noting that both nations share deep-rooted connections shaped by centuries of interaction, migration, and cooperation. He stressed that the two countries remain aligned in their pursuit of regional peace and sustainable development.
In his remarks, Abdelaal underscored the strong relationship between both nations, pointing to the integration of Nigerians within Sudanese society as a reflection of enduring people-to-people ties. He also briefed the Nigerian side on recent developments in Sudan, including ongoing recovery efforts in conflict-affected areas.
While acknowledging progress in restoring stability in parts of Sudan, the envoy raised concerns about continued external interference, warning of its potential to prolong the crisis and undermine regional security.
Both parties agreed on the need for dialogue and negotiation as the most viable path to ending hostilities, noting that the situation in Sudan has far-reaching implications for peace and stability across Africa, particularly in the Sahel region.
Ahmed reiterated Nigeria’s active engagement within the African Union and broader international community in advocating for a peaceful resolution to the crisis. He emphasised that lasting peace must be anchored on inclusive political processes and sustained diplomatic efforts.
The meeting also explored opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation, including plans to convene the Nigeria–Sudan Political Consultations Committee to address shared interests.
Discussions further covered a proposed high-level visit by Sudanese leadership to Nigeria, alongside measures to safeguard Nigerian assets in Sudan and support affected citizens.
Both countries concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to deepening diplomatic relations and working together to promote peace, stability, and prosperity across the region.
