Nigeria has congratulated the Government and people of The Gambia on the occasion of their Independence Day, reaffirming the enduring diplomatic relations and shared democratic values between both nations.
In a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, extended warm congratulations to his Gambian counterpart, Honourable Sering Modou Njie, as the country marked its independence anniversary celebrated annually on February 18.
The Minister noted that the historic anniversary, which commemorates The Gambia’s attainment of independence in 1965, symbolizes the country’s enduring commitment to sovereignty, democratic governance, and national unity. He said Nigeria joins citizens of the West African nation in celebrating the resilience and aspirations of the Gambian people as they mark the milestone with national festivities.
According to the statement, Nigeria and The Gambia maintain a longstanding and fraternal relationship anchored on shared history, cultural affinity, and mutual membership in regional and international organisations, including the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union, and the United Nations.
The ministry highlighted ongoing bilateral cooperation between Abuja and Banjul spanning political engagement, security collaboration, trade, education, and technical assistance. Both countries, it said, continue to work together in promoting peacebuilding initiatives, strengthening democratic institutions, and advancing regional integration consistent with ECOWAS objectives and the African Continental Free Trade Area framework.
Ambassador Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations with The Gambia by expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest and strengthening people-to-people ties rooted in African solidarity and shared progress.
Nigeria also conveyed its best wishes to the Government and people of The Gambia for continued peace, democratic consolidation, and sustainable development.
