The Defence Headquarters has refuted recent allegations regarding the Nigerian military’s visa requests for the Invictus Games in Vancouver, Canada.
In a statement signed by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, the military clarified that it received an official invitation to participate in the global sporting event, which celebrates wounded and recovering service personnel. Nigeria’s contingent consisted of three officers, 21 athletes, and a physiotherapist, with the Invictus Games Foundation covering accommodation and feeding costs.
However, despite all necessary arrangements, only 14 members of the team were granted visas. The team leader, captain, physiotherapist, and seven athletes were denied entry, preventing full participation.
Despite the setback, Team Nigeria showcased resilience and excellence, winning gold, silver, and bronze medals, bringing pride to the nation and Africa. The Defence Headquarters noted that the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, who was also expected to attend, would have further motivated the team.
The statement also highlighted the military’s commitment to the welfare of its personnel, including the ongoing construction of the Invictus Foundation Centre the first of its kind in Africa to provide mental and physical rehabilitation for wounded soldiers.
The Defence Headquarters therefore urged the public to disregard the false claims and continue supporting efforts to enhance national security and the well-being of service members.
