In a landmark celebration of press freedom and regional integration, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) honoured 12 outstanding journalists, including Nigeria’s Raymond Enoch, at the maiden edition of the ECOWAS Journalists Excellence Awards held at the prestigious Coco Ocean Hotel in Banjul, The Gambia.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, the Chief of Staff, Mr. Kolley, described journalists as “agents of accountability, defenders of democracy, and catalysts for social change.”
“The story of ECOWAS cannot be told without the storytellers the journalists who document our progress, question our shortcomings, and amplify the voices of our citizens,” he stated, while acknowledging the over 200 entries submitted from across member states.
Representing The Gambia’s Minister of Information, the Permanent Secretary lauded the awardees and reaffirmed the country’s unwavering commitment to press freedom, ethical journalism, and regional solidarity.
The awards recognised excellence across six categories: radio, television, print, online journalism, photography, and videography. Entries were reviewed by an independent seven-member jury chaired by respected Gambian communication strategist, Mr. Abdoulie Gassama, who praised the winners for their “integrity, originality, and far-reaching impact.”
ECOWAS Permanent Representative to The Gambia, Mrs. Miatta Lily French, hailed the awardees as “voices for the voiceless,” commending their commitment to truth, development, and public service.
Raymond Enoch’s recognition further affirmed the rising prominence of Nigerian journalists in shaping narratives that drive regional cooperation and societal progress.
The evening concluded with captivating cultural performances, celebrating West Africa’s rich diversity and unity rounding off a memorable night of honour, reflection, and renewed commitment to the vital role of journalism in nation-building.
