The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has reaffirmed the critical role of data sovereignty and security in building Nigeria’s digital economy. This was highlighted during the 2024 Digital Nigeria Innovation Challenge, where the agency underscored the importance of responsible data utilization in fostering a sustainable digital ecosystem.
Speaking at the event, NITDA’s Director General, Kashifu Inuwa CCIE, represented by the Director of Information Technology Infrastructure Solutions, Mr. Oladejo Olawumi, described data as the currency of the digital economy. He emphasized that prioritizing home-grown solutions and safeguarding Nigeria’s data are essential for achieving the country’s digital aspirations.
The Innovation Challenge, organized by NITDA’s Office for Nigerian Digital Innovation (ONDI), provided a platform for tech entrepreneurs to showcase innovative solutions. It aligns with NITDA’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP) 2.0, which aims to position Nigeria as a global leader in the digital space.
“The issue of having something home-grown is very important because everything is all about data. Data drives the digital economy, and it’s key to building a future that benefits everyone,” Inuwa said.
He encouraged participants to leverage the Nigeria Startup Act (NSA) to secure funding, attract investors, and transform their ideas into viable solutions. He also announced plans to establish “Innovation Nests” in three states, with an expansion to six more by year’s end. These centres will offer state-of-the-art facilities to inspire creativity, collaboration, and investment.
“These centres will be world-class, offering spaces to relax, collaborate, and attract global investment,” Inuwa stated. “Whether you win today or not, this platform is a step toward achieving your dreams. Nigeria has the talent, and NITDA is here to nurture and celebrate it.”
In her opening remarks, the National Coordinator of ONDI, Ms. Victoria Fabunmi, described the event as an opportunity to spotlight groundbreaking ideas and foster collaboration within Nigeria’s tech ecosystem.
“The Innovation Challenge aligns with NITDA’s SRAP pillars and the Ministry’s blueprint for Knowledge, Innovation, and Policy. Participants have identified opportunities and gaps in the innovation ecosystem, strengthening the country’s digital landscape,” Fabunmi said.
The 2024 Digital Nigeria Innovation Challenge reaffirmed NITDA’s commitment to supporting indigenous innovation, empowering entrepreneurs, and driving Nigeria’s growth as a global digital economy leader.
