In a well-coordinated operation, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals have successfully raided multiple illegal mining and sand dredging sites across Akwa Ibom, arrested six suspects involved in unlawful activities.
The operation, dubbed Operation Hayakin Kogo, targeted illegal mining operations that have been responsible for significant revenue losses for the Federal Government, environmental destruction, and public health risks to local communities. The NSCDC has ramped up efforts to curb these illegal activities in line with its commitment to protecting the country’s mining resources.
Commandant General of the NSCDC, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, reaffirmed the Corps’ resolve to safeguard Nigeria’s critical assets, especially in the solid minerals sector, which plays a crucial role in the nation’s economy.
“The fight against illegal mining is non-negotiable. We will continue to enforce compliance with mining laws to protect the nation’s resources,” Dr. Audi stated.
In a related development, the Mining Marshals’ Commander, ACC Attah John Onoja, warned illegal miners to desist or face legal consequences. He further urged those wishing to mine legally to approach the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development and the Mining Cadastre Office for proper authorization.
