The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condemned the alleged harassment and verbal intimidation of journalists by Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, following a media engagement where a reporter requested verifiable data on the impact of the state government’s policies.
In a statement signed by its President, Alhassan Yahya, the union described the incident as troubling and inconsistent with democratic principles, stressed that journalists have a constitutional responsibility to demand accountability from public office holders.
According to the NUJ, the journalist in question had sought measurable evidence to demonstrate how government programmes were improving the lives of Abia residents. The union maintained that requesting data to assess policy impact is neither provocative nor disrespectful, but a fundamental duty of the media in promoting transparency and good governance.
“In a democracy, public office holders are accountable to the people, and the media serves as a legitimate bridge between the government and the governed,” the statement read. “Any attempt to intimidate or harass journalists for demanding accountability undermines democratic values and press freedom.”
The union reminded public officials that freedom of expression and press freedom are guaranteed under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, urging them to demonstrate tolerance, openness and respect in their interactions with the media.
The NUJ called on Governor Otti to refrain from actions or statements capable of intimidating journalists, provide verifiable data when requested, and publicly reaffirm his administration’s commitment to press freedom and constructive media engagement.
Reaffirming its support for journalists in Abia State and across the country, the union pledged to continue defending the rights, safety and professional integrity of media practitioners.
“A free press is not an adversary of government it is a partner in progress,” the statement added.
