The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on lawmakers to prioritise the use of technology in the management and transmission of election results as part of ongoing electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a press release signed by its National President, Alhassan Yahya, on February 9, 2026, the Union said clarity in electoral procedures, particularly in the handling and movement of results from polling units, is critical to public confidence and national stability.
The NUJ noted that ambiguity in election result management could erode trust in the democratic process and heighten political tension across the country. It stressed that Nigerians have consistently demanded reforms that guarantee transparency, openness, and verifiability in elections.
According to the Union, modern democracies across the world are increasingly leveraging digital tools to protect the integrity of the ballot and ensure that election outcomes reflect the will of the electorate without avoidable delays or uncertainty.
The NUJ maintained that technology-driven mechanisms for the prompt transmission of polling unit results to designated collation platforms would significantly reduce suspicion, enhance transparency, and limit post-election disputes.
As lawmakers conclude consultations and fine-tune legislative provisions, the Union urged them to adopt clear and enforceable guidelines on the real-time transmission of election results, noting that such measures would demonstrate a commitment to credible, transparent, and peaceful polls.
The Union further stated that strengthening the framework for election result management in line with global best practices would deepen citizens’ faith in democratic governance and contribute to political stability.
It called on all stakeholders to act in the national interest to ensure that Nigeria’s electoral architecture promotes transparency, accountability, and public trust.
