The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has warned members of the public against falling victim to fake and AI-generated employment letters being circulated by fraudsters seeking to exploit unsuspecting job seekers.
The Commission, in a statement signed by its Head of Media and Corporate Communications, Eniola Akinkuotu, on Tuesday, said it had received reports of fake employment letters bearing the names of persons unknown to the Commission.
According to the NUPRC, some unscrupulous individuals and criminal elements are also extorting money from members of the public under the false pretext of helping them secure employment with the Commission.
The Commission said it had reported the activities of the suspected fraudsters to relevant law enforcement agencies and was awaiting the outcome of investigations.
The NUPRC urged members of the public to exercise caution and verify any employment-related information purportedly emanating from the Commission to avoid falling victim to the scam.
The regulatory agency categorically clarified that there is currently no ongoing recruitment exercise at the Commission.
It further stated that whenever it decides to commence recruitment, the exercise would be conducted strictly in accordance with extant laws and government regulations.
The Commission therefore advised job seekers and members of the public to disregard any individual or purported recruitment document demanding payment or offering employment opportunities in exchange for money.
The NUPRC reiterated its commitment to transparency and due process in its employment and other official activities.
