Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, celebrated its 48th Convocation on Saturday, 14th December 2024, with notable dignitaries and key stakeholders in attendance. The event, themed “Great Ife: Pathways to a Greater Tomorrow,” featured the conferral of degrees to graduands, along with the announcement of several strategic initiatives aimed at positioning the institution for future growth.
Professor Siyan Oyeweso, Chairman of the OAU Governing Council, delivered the opening address, highlighting the university’s significant achievements and future plans. He emphasized the university’s commitment to excellence through a 25-year strategic plan (2025-2050), which focuses on enhancing research, building international partnerships, and addressing infrastructural challenges.
The Convocation saw the recognition of outstanding individuals, including the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who was honored for her generous contributions to the university’s beautification efforts. Other honorees included Senator (Mrs.) Oluremi Tinubu, Dr. Akinade Akanmu Ogunbiyi, Professor Anthony Olusegun Adegbulugbe, Mr. Olutokun Kark Toriola, and Mr. Daere Afonya-a Akobo.
In his remarks, Professor Oyeweso also commended the efforts of OAU’s leadership and staff, who have worked tirelessly to advance the institution’s mission in a resource-scarce environment. He recognized the support of stakeholders, including the Nigerian government, particularly President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for reforms that support the university’s growth.
The convocation ceremony underscored OAU’s role in producing world-class scholars and its ambition to reclaim its position as a leading institution of higher learning globally. As the university embraces a new era, its leadership remains focused on providing an environment that fosters academic excellence, research innovation, and community impact.
