President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has said opposition parties in Nigeria will remain in confusion until the end of the 2027 general elections.
Akpabio made the remark while addressing guests in Uyo during a reception held in honour of the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu.
According to him, the decision by opposition parties to commence political activities ahead of the timeline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for August 26, 2026, shows that they are not properly organised.
“Each time we make a law and the opposition frowns, I get excited that I have made the right law,” Akpabio said.
He noted that while the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is consulting and mobilising politically across the country, opposition groups are still trying to organise themselves.
“While we are moving around Nigeria, consulting and campaigning, many of them are still trying to form their political party. They haven’t even finished registration and they would continue in confusion till the 2027 election is over,” he said.
Akpabio also criticised divisions within opposition parties, particularly the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), noting that leadership disputes have weakened their structures.
According to him, the Labour Party, which recorded significant votes in the last election, is currently facing internal challenges with multiple leadership claims across different regions.
He also pointed to internal disagreements within the PDP, saying the party now operates with multiple offices and secretaries in Abuja, raising questions about who is authorised to sign official documents.
Meanwhile, opposition parties have accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of using federal power to weaken them. The president, however, dismissed the claims, insisting that he cannot solve internal problems within opposition parties.
