The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has charged troops of the 3 Division of the Nigerian Army to remain disciplined, committed and professional, stressing that their assignment in Plateau State is critical to Nigeria’s national stability.
Lieutenant General Shaibu gave the charge on Monday, January 19, 2026, during an operational visit to the 3 Division Headquarters in Jos, where he addressed officers and soldiers on their responsibilities amid ongoing security operations in the state.
The Army Chief emphasised that discipline remained the bedrock of the military profession, noting that service in the Nigerian Army is voluntary and founded on the noble duty of defending the nation’s territorial integrity.
He disclosed that he had received detailed briefings from the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 3 Division, on operational and welfare challenges confronting the troops, adding that the most urgent concerns had already been addressed.
According to him, Army Headquarters is providing the necessary combat enablers to ensure personnel are properly equipped to execute their duties effectively.
“The welfare of our troops remains a top priority. We will continue to provide the enabling environment for you to carry out your responsibilities efficiently,” the COAS assured.
Lieutenant General Shaibu urged young soldiers to respect the chain of command and seek guidance from their superiors, stressing that officers are responsible for mentoring subordinates towards successful and fulfilling military careers.
He also charged personnel to maintain high standards of physical fitness and mental alertness, explaining that deliberate measures have been put in place to prepare them for the rigours of military service.
Highlighting the importance of leadership at all levels, the Army Chief described Senior Non-Commissioned Officers as a critical link between officers and soldiers, urging them to provide effective middle-level leadership and sound guidance.
On the ongoing operations in Plateau State, he described the security situation as unique and assured troops that Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP) is being adequately guided and supported to achieve its mandate.
The COAS further encouraged troops to channel grievances through the appropriate chain of command, assuring them that such concerns would be promptly addressed.
Reaffirming the Army’s appreciation of their sacrifices, Lieutenant General Shaibu urged personnel to remain proud of their service and to discharge their duties with professionalism and honour in line with global best practices.
As part of efforts to enhance troop welfare, the Army Chief commissioned two blocks of 30 flats for Non-Commissioned Officers, as well as a separate residential accommodation block for officers at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos.
