The Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Graduates’ Association (UNIFEMGA), Abuja Chapter, on Wednesday convened its 19th Annual Ramadan Lecture/Iftar, called on Muslims to prioritise healthy living, fulfil their Zakat obligations and intensify charitable acts in line with the spiritual objectives of the holy month.
The event, held at the Nigerian Society of Engineers Main Auditorium, Central Area, Abuja, drew members of the association, clerics, scholars, public officials and journalists. The lecture, titled “Ramadan: Protecting Your Health and Purifying Your Wealth,” was delivered by Dr. Saheed Alimi, Imam of National Hospital Mosque, Abuja.
In his lecture, Dr. Alimi underscored the multidimensional benefits of Ramadan fasting, describing it as both a spiritual obligation and a framework for healthy living. He explained that fasting, when properly observed, allowed the digestive system to rest, supported metabolic balance and encouraged moderation in consumption. According to him, Ramadan provided an opportunity for believers to reassess their dietary habits and adopt healthier lifestyles rooted in discipline and restraint.
He cautioned against excessive indulgence during sahur and iftar, noting that the spiritual essence of fasting should not be undermined by unhealthy eating patterns. Beyond physical wellbeing, he said, fasting builds emotional strength, patience and self-control, qualities essential for personal growth and social harmony.
The cleric devoted significant attention to the concept of wealth purification through Zakat, described it as a compulsory pillar of Islam that complete a Muslim’s faith. He expressed concern that many eligible Muslims either neglect the obligation or fail to properly assess their financial status annually.
Explaining the concept of nisab, the minimum wealth threshold that made Zakat obligatory, Dr. Alimi highlighted the classical benchmarks of gold and silver and their contemporary equivalents in monetary value. He encouraged Muslims to adopt a consistent method of calculation in line with established Islamic jurisprudence and to ensure timely payment once eligibility is established.
Drawing from early Islamic history, he recalled the firm stance of the first Caliph in upholding Zakat compliance, emphasising that faith and social responsibility are inseparable. He added that Ramadan represented the peak season of generosity, noting that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was described as most generous during the holy month. He therefore urged Muslims to increase structured charity and feeding programmes, particularly for the vulnerable.
In his opening remarks, Chairman of UNIFEMGA Abuja Chapter and Chief Host, Arc. Sulaiman Muhammad, described Ramadan as a season of reflection, compassion and collective responsibility. He said the annual lecture series, now in its 19th edition, was designed to deepen spiritual understanding while strengthening bonds among members and advancing community-focused initiatives. He particularly emphasised the importance of feeding the needy as a practical demonstration of faith.
Delivering goodwill on behalf of the President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr. Ali Alimaisuya Rabiu, his representative commended UNIFEMGA for sustaining an initiative that promotes ethical values, discipline and national development.
Also speaking, Hon. Ibrahim Kunle Olarewaju, Senior Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters, reminded participants that the ultimate benefits of fasting accrue to the individual through moral refinement and spiritual accountability. He noted that Ramadan offers believers an opportunity to recalibrate their lives and strengthen their relationship with God.
In her remarks, Hon. Justice Ajoke Adepoju of the FCT High Court encouraged Muslims to uphold justice, integrity and fairness in all dealings, describing the holy month as a period for moral renewal.
The UNIFEMGA National Vice President, in his remarks, lauded the Abuja Chapter for its consistency and organisational growth. He noted that the association continues to expand its influence nationally and internationally, urged members to remain united and committed to service. He also commended the chapter’s developmental vision and pledged continued support from the national body to strengthen its programmes and outreach.
A major highlight of the evening was a fundraising drive toward a N3 billion endowment fund for the construction of an ultra-modern UNIFEMGA Abuja Islamic Centre. Coordinated by Alhaji Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the initiative received voluntary donations from members and supporters, reflecting strong commitment to the project.
The programme concluded with a communal iftar and prayers offered for the association and the nation at large.
The Annual Ramadan Lecture/Iftar remained one of the flagship activities of the Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Graduates’ Association (UNIFEMGA) Abuja Chapter, reinforcing its dedication to faith-based enlightenment, social responsibility and community development.
