I’d waited a few days to see if the presidency or media aides of President Bola Tinubu would deny report that as part or his intervention in the Ondo State political crisis, the president actually endorsed the idea that the Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, an elected number two citizen of the state, should send in an undated resignation letter?
This development had disturbed me for a few days, and I had hoped that Tinubu or his men would come out to refute it. First, it was the speaker of the state House of Assembly that hinted at the peace deal, and a commissioner would later confirm it.
I know about political solutions and how knotty or complicated they can be. But, how do you explain a political solution that seeks to undermine basic democratic tenets?
How desperate is the ailing governor or his thoughtless camp that they would think the only route to peace is for an elected person to send in an undated resignation letter?
If this option is not deemed criminal, I don’t know what else it is. They didn’t ask a man, who is presumed incapacitated to send in his resignation but an able-bodied person, just to satisfy certain political cravings or interest?
I don’t know what these guys see that emboldens them to put democracy to so much indecent test, knowing full well that there’s really nothing irreversible about it.
Coming from a man, Rotimi Akeredolu, who played an active role in the era of the late President Umar Yar’Adua as then NBA president, it exposes nothing but the hypocrisy of the nation’s leaders.
President Tinubu, it is cheeky, disingenuous and of course, hypocritical to ask the deputy governor of Ondo State to send in an undated resignation, just because some people do not want him to be an issue in the forthcoming governorship election.
Democracy may not have a manual, but it functions on a set of rules and regulations as well as constitutional laws.
The brazen disposition of leadership to trample on some of these will some day have consequences. But, let it be known for sure that the option handed the Ondo deputy governor is not democratic in any form or shape. Period!
