New members of the National Steering Committee of the Open Government Partnership (OGP) Nigeria have been urged to wholeheartedly embrace the principles of the OGP as Nigeria strengthens the implementation cycle of its Third National Action Plan.
The Acting Co-chairman of the National Steering Committee (NSC) of the Open Government Partnership (OGP) Nigeria and Registrar-General of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Alhaji Garba Abubakar, gave charge while declaring open the 19th OGP Nigeria National Steering Committee Meeting held today in Abuja.
Alhaji Garba Abubakar stressed the need for the new members to work as a cohesive unit to ensure that Nigeria maintains its position as a beacon in the global OGP community.
He therefore assured that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration was committed to building on the gains made during the previous administration.
The Acting Co-chairman of the OGP used the forum to commend the NAP Committee, thematic working groups, and the OGP Secretariat, among others, for what he called their dedication in co-creating another plan that will shape Nigeria’s future in open government.
Garba Abubakar said that as a global leader, Nigeria would continue to inspire other nations in the OGP, as evidenced by the recent commendation for launching its Beneficial Ownership Register on 25th May,2023.
He therefore restated their commitment to ensure that the gains from the past were sustained and carried forward for Nigeria to continue to be among the global OGP leaders.
In their separate remarks, the National Coordinator, Nigeria Open Government Partnership (OGP), Dr. Gloria Ahmed, and the Executive Secretary, Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, Oji Obonnaya Oji, commended the Registrar-General of the CAC for providing office accommodation to the OGP Secretariat within the CAC Zone 5 Building.
They maintained that the gesture would greatly enhance the activities of the OGP Nigeria as it strives to maintain its global position.
Stakeholders, including Soji Apampa Executive Director of the Convention on Business Integrity in Nigeria, Eze Onyekpere, Executive Director of the Centre for Social Justice and a representative from the Ministry of Justice, among others, attended the meeting.
The next OGP Global Summit is scheduled for September 2023 in Tallinn, Estonia.
