A Non Governmental Organisation, Save The Consumers has said that it will mark this year World Toilet Day in some selected Communities in Niger State and Federal Capital Territory.
In a statement released in Abuja by the Executive Director of Save The Consumers, Dr Aliyu Ilias, the NGO would mark the 2017 World Toilet Day with Government Girls Arabic School, Dikko, Gurara Local Government, Maje Central Market, Suleja Local government both of Niger state,and People with Disabilities ,at Agwan-Guragu ,Karamajii , FCT, Abuja,
Ilias said ” the practice of defecating in open such as fields, bushes, forest and open bodies,causes a lot of communicable diseases such as Diarrhea,dysentery,cholera, about 400,00 Nigerians died of Diarrhea annually in Nigeria and according to UNICEF , 46 million people in Nigeria does not have toilet.”
“Open defecation also causes parasitic infection such as hookworms,whipworm and roundworm, this worm affect pregnant women and causes underweight and malnutrition for children.”He added
Save The Consumers said this year World Toilet Day Campaign will focus on how to curb the practice of open defecation among community dwellers and School ages .The NGO also said that the campaign would also focus renegotiating and redirecting some cultural believes on open defecation .
The Save the consumer urged government to declare state of emergency on toilet facilities in Nigeria.
