The Nigerian Senate has passed the second reading of a bill proposing the establishment of the Federal College of Vocational and Technical Studies, Ikire, Osun State. The bill, sponsored by Senator Oyewumi Kamorudeen Olalere (Osun West), aimed to address the country’s growing demand for skilled middle-level professionals.
During the debate on the bill, Senator Oyewumi stressed the importance of vocational and technical education in equipping young Nigerians with practical skills that will enhance employment opportunities, foster entrepreneurship, and contribute to economic development.
The proposed institution will offer recognized certifications in various technical fields, including:
Automobile and Heavy-Duty Truck Mechanics
Electrical and Electronics Technology
Panel Beating and Iron Melting Technology
Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technology
Building Technology
Paint Manufacturing Technology
Dyeing and Fabric Artistry
Senator Oyewumi emphasized that technical skill acquisition must be a national priority, especially as advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) continue to reshape the global job market. He also highlighted that establishing the college would help reduce youth restiveness and other social vices by providing young people with marketable skills.
The bill received overwhelming support from lawmakers, who acknowledged its significance in human capacity development. With its successful second reading, the bill now moves to the committee stage for further legislative scrutiny.
