The Nigerian Senate has expressed grave concern over the recurring fire outbreaks and oil spills in the Niger Delta region, urging relevant authorities to take swift action to address the environmental hazards caused by these incidents.
This call to action followed a motion raised by Senator Ipalibo Banigo, who represents Rivers West Senatorial District. She recalled a recent devastating fire that occurred due to an oil spill in the region. The fire not only caused significant environmental damage but also led to the destruction of property and the displacement of countless residents.
The Senate emphasized the need for urgent enforcement of existing environmental laws and regulations to prevent such disasters from happening in the future. In addition, lawmakers called on the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) to take immediate steps to ensure the safety of the environment, prioritizing prevention and mitigation measures to safeguard communities in the Niger Delta.
Meanwhile, the Senate has confirmed the appointment of Captain Chris Najomo as the new Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). His appointment is seen as a step toward strengthening the country’s aviation sector.
