In a major stride toward agricultural development and poverty reduction, Senator (Dr.) Victor C. Umeh, representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, has trained and empowered 520 constituents with modern agricultural inputs and equipment.
The empowerment initiative, which took place in the senatorial district, is part of the senator’s broader plan to promote food security and self-sufficiency through sustainable agricultural practices. Senator Umeh, who also chairs the Senate Committee on National Population and National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), was accompanied by former Labour Party presidential candidate, His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, during the distribution exercise.
The beneficiaries received a variety of resources including fertilizers, fish pond tents, piglets, palm seedlings, poultry feed, day-old chicks, cassava stems, maize seedlings, fingerlings, fish feed, and financial support to aid their agricultural ventures.
Speaking at the event, Senator Umeh stated that the initiative is designed to rekindle interest in agriculture and reduce over-dependence on government jobs.
“This intervention is a continuation of the effort to feed our nation, just like in 1979 when Operation Feed the Nation was launched. Agriculture remains the key to eradicating poverty,” he said.
He disclosed that the initiative was only the first phase, with a second batch of beneficiaries to be trained and empowered before the end of the year.
“Instead of always saying ‘give me a job,’ think of agriculture as a means to become self-employed,” he urged the participants.
Highlighting the quality of inputs distributed, Senator Umeh noted that the hybrid maize and cassava stems were sourced from the Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu, Ebonyi State, a leading institution in agricultural research and innovation.
“The corn we’re giving out is hybrid and will produce a high yield. The cassava stems are also high-quality hybrids. The fishery tents eliminate the need for digging trenches or constructing traditional fish ponds.
“The palm seedlings are a premium variety that don’t grow too tall. In just three years, you’ll start harvesting,”he explained
One of the beneficiaries, Ikegwuonu Ifenna, expressed appreciation for the initiative, describing it as a game-changer.
“This project is a significant step towards reducing unemployment and ensuring food security. Our hardworking and selfless senator, Distinguished Senator Victor Umeh, OHAMADIKE, deserves our gratitude. May the good Lord continue to guide and protect him as he serves our people,” she said.
The program marks another milestone in Senator Umeh’s commitment to grassroots development and community empowerment.
