The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, has urged journalists to uphold truth, professionalism and ethical reporting as critical tools for strengthening national unity and security, stressed that Nigeria’s stability depend not only on military operations but also on responsible information management.
Oluyede, who was represented at an Easter retreat organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, said the Armed Forces remain committed to defending the nation despite ongoing security challenges, expressing optimism that Nigeria would overcome its difficulties.
He noted that the Easter message of resurrection reflects hope and renewal, adding that national challenges are temporary and surmountable through faith and unity.
“Nigeria continues to confront complex security challenges, yet we remain resilient. Our experience shows that trials are not permanent and renewal is always possible when faith and unity prevail,” he said.
The defence chief reaffirmed the military’s determination to tackle terrorism, insurgency, banditry and other threats, adding that the sacrifices of troops have contributed significantly to restoring peace in many communities.
He emphasised the strategic role of the media in national security, urging journalists to ensure accuracy in reporting and avoid narratives that could incite fear or division.
“In today’s information age, security operations are fought not only on the battlefield but also in the information domain. Accurate and responsible reporting strengthens national unity and builds public trust,” he added.
Oluyede also called on Nigerians to support security agencies through cooperation and timely information, while paying tribute to fallen heroes and urging continued prayers for troops in operational theatres.
Also speaking, the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, highlighted the importance of ethical journalism in promoting accountability, good governance and national development.
He said responsible journalism helps to combat corruption, strengthen institutions and foster an informed citizenry essential for nation-building.
“A nation is not built only with infrastructure, but with trust, accountability and an informed citizenry,” the minister said.
Earlier, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, called on journalists to draw inspiration from the Easter message by renewing their commitment to truth, integrity and professional excellence.
She acknowledged the challenges faced by media practitioners, including tight deadlines and risks associated with truth-telling, but urged journalists to remain steadfast in upholding the ethics of the profession.
“Operating in the Federal Capital Territory places a unique responsibility on us. We are at the center of national discourse. Our words carry weight, our reports influence decisions, and our integrity strengthens democracy,” she said.
Grace Ike also emphasized the need for unity within the union, describing it as essential for advancing journalism practice and protecting press freedom.
“As a union, we must continue to stand together. Unity is our strength, and through collective resolve, we can overcome any obstacle,” she added.
The Easter retreat, themed “Resurrection Power: Grace, Faith, Hope and New Life,” brought together journalists, security officials and other stakeholders to reflect on faith, professional responsibility and the role of the media in national development.
