Staff of the Sheda Science and Technology Complex (SHESTCO) have accused former Director General Prof. Paul Chidozie Onyenekwe of unlawfully remaining in office and accessing public funds weeks after the expiration of his tenure, calling for urgent federal intervention.
In a protest statement circulated on Thursday, the staff, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Prof. Onyenekwe’s tenure ended on December 4, 2025. However, he allegedly refused to hand over to the most senior director, flouting civil service rules and a directive from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
Describing the situation as a “blatant disregard for the rule of law and public interest,” the workers insisted that the SGF had clearly instructed heads of parastatals and agencies whose tenures had expired to immediately hand over to their most senior directors. They further alleged that Prof. Onyenekwe continues to access public funds and deploy agency resources “as if he is still in office,” calling it a gross abuse of power and betrayal of public trust.
Beyond the alleged refusal to hand over, the staff raised concerns about the legitimacy of Prof. Onyenekwe’s appointment, urging anti-graft agencies the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC)—to investigate claims that his appointment was not properly approved via the SGF.
The statement warned that if found culpable, Prof. Onyenekwe should immediately refund all salaries and benefits received during his tenure, with decisive action taken by relevant authorities.
The staff also appealed to the SGF to enforce compliance and restore order at the agency, urged the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to uphold its agenda of transparency and accountability.
They concluded by pledging to continue monitoring developments, insisting that Nigerians deserve integrity and strict adherence to due process in the management of public institutions.
