The The Democratic Front (TDF) has accused former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el‑Rufai, of making what it described as spurious allegations against the Federal Government and the National Security Adviser in a calculated attempt to stir national anxiety and unrest.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Mallam Danjuma Muhammad, and Secretary, Chief Wale Adedayo, the group urged relevant authorities to allow the law to take its course following legal action reportedly instituted against the former governor.
TDF described el-Rufai’s claims concerning the alleged importation of Thallium Sulphate a toxic compound by the Office of the National Security Adviser as false and politically motivated, alleged that the accusations were intended to mislead the public amid investigations into the alleged diversion of N432 billion from Kaduna State coffers during his tenure.
The group said it was irresponsible for a politically exposed individual to make weighty allegations without providing documentary evidence, stressing that such claims could unnecessarily heighten public tension.
According to the statement, it was particularly troubling that el-Rufai allegedly admitted being aware of the illegal tapping of the telephone line of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, described the act as a serious breach of national security and unbecoming of a public figure.
TDF, however, commended the Federal Government for what it called a swift legal response to the matter, added that el-Rufai failed to observe due process by taking his allegations public before receiving an official response to correspondence reportedly sent to the NSA.
The group further alleged that the controversy surrounding the purported importation of Thallium Sulphate was designed to divert public attention from ongoing investigations into the alleged misappropriation of N432 billion during his administration.
It recalled that the Kaduna State House of Assembly, in a 2024 report forwarded to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), accused the former governor of diverting funds through multiple channels between 2015 and 2023.
TDF concluded that el-Rufai’s conduct was unbecoming of a political leader of his standing and warned against actions capable of undermining public trust or creating unnecessary national tension.
