As we reflect on the recent observance of International Education Day, it is an opportune moment to assess the state of education in Edo State and the transformative efforts led by His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo.
Growing up, I was privileged to experience quality education in a conducive environment-clean classrooms, well-equipped halls, and dedicated teachers were the norm. Sadly, the standard of education in Edo State has declined over the years, leaving many children without access to the quality education they deserve. This decline has fueled my advocacy for educational reform. Having worked with students across Nigeria and provided creative materials through mini libraries, I have seen the disparities between Edo and other states. Each comparison deepens my concern for our children, who are being denied their fundamental right to quality education.
Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration has rekindled hope for a brighter future. Even during his tenure in the Senate, I admired his commitment to education. Now, as the Executive Governor, he is demonstrating his dedication to revitalizing the sector. His leadership comes at a critical time when the state’s education system is in dire need of reform.
At its core, education is about nurturing critical thinking, encouraging students to question, analyze, and form their own perspectives. Unfortunately, Edo State has struggled to achieve this due to teacher shortages and the merging of schools. We have failed to instill essential values in our children: ethical behavior, empathy, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to society. These values are not just academic ideals but are crucial for building a cohesive and progressive community.
Education is the foundation of all progress. It is not a scam, as some claim, but a lifelong journey that begins from infancy. Every leader must prioritize education, as it shapes the future of society. The previous administration’s neglect of the sector was deeply troubling. Schools were merged, and standards plummeted, leaving the state in a state of educational stagnation. Many schools that once thrived were reduced to shadows of their former selves, and the impact on students and teachers alike has been devastating.
Governor Okpebholo’s efforts, however, are a breath of fresh air. His commitment to transforming the education sector is evident. Quality education fosters creativity, innovation, and social responsibility. The rise in cybercrime and other societal ills can be traced to a lack of basic education. Parents and the government must collaborate to nurture well-rounded individuals. Parents, in particular, must serve as role models, as their values and educational outlook significantly influence their children’s development.
Education leaves a lasting legacy-skills, knowledge, and understanding that endure long after formal lessons end. Without dedicated teachers and guardians, how can we equip our children for the future? In a rapidly evolving world, educators must empower students with the knowledge, resilience, and values needed to navigate complexity. The role of teachers cannot be overstated; they are the architects of the future, shaping minds and inspiring dreams.
Governor Okpebholo’s administration is turning my vision for Edo’s children into reality. Recently, he fulfilled a campaign promise by approving the recruitment of 500 public school teachers to address the shortage across the state’s three senatorial districts. This is the first phase of a larger plan to revitalize the sector. Additionally, the appointment of Dr. Emmanuel Paddy Iyamu as Commissioner for Education demonstrates the administration’s commitment to excellence. Dr. Iyamu, a seasoned educationist, brings a wealth of experience and a clear vision for the sector.
Iyamu has emphasized the government’s dedication to staffing public schools with qualified teachers, ensuring that the era of understaffed schools is over. Recruitment will be merit-based, and the process will be transparent. This marks a significant step toward providing quality education for every Edo child. The administration’s focus on infrastructure development and the appointment of a competent professional, Barrister Onome Goodness Briggs, as the Executive Chairman to lead the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) further underscore its commitment. Governor Okpebholo’s love for the average Edo child is evident, and his efforts signal a new dawn for the state.
The “New Edo Rising” vision is becoming a reality under the dynamic leadership of His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo. The recruitment of 500 teachers is just the beginning. Plans to introduce digital learning platforms, vocational training, and mentorship programs are underway. The increased budget allocation to education reflects the government’s seriousness about transforming the sector. These initiatives are not just about improving academic performance but also about equipping students with the skills needed to thrive in a competitive global economy.

The future is bright, and with the right mindset, you can achieve greatness.
