President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the killing of soldiers of the 29 Task Force Brigade under Operation HADIN KAI, following a coordinated terrorist attack on their base in Benisheikh, Borno State.
The tragic incident, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, April 9, 2026, was confirmed by the Defence Headquarters, with several soldiers reportedly lost their lives in the line of duty.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and the Nigerian military, urging them to remain strong in the face of the painful loss.
The President paid tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of the troops, noting that they fought gallantly to repel the attackers and prevent insurgents, including elements of Boko Haram, from overrunning the communities under their protection.
Describing the fallen troops as “unforgettable heroes,” Tinubu reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting the Armed Forces with improved welfare and necessary equipment to sustain ongoing operations against insurgency.
“From the reports I have received, our armed forces have been carrying out sustained land and air offensives, neutralising many insurgents and their commanders. This counterattack is a sign of desperation,” the President stated.
He also urged military personnel across all operational theatres not to be discouraged, but to remain resolute in defending the nation’s sovereignty.
President Tinubu further called on Nigerians and the media to stand firmly behind the military, cautioned against narratives that may undermine troop morale or glorify attacks on security forces.
He also extended condolences to the government and people of Borno State, assuring continued collaboration to restore lasting peace and security in the region.
