Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have successfully foiled a coordinated terrorist attack on the 29 Task Force Brigade Headquarters in Benisheikh, Borno State, reinforcing ongoing military efforts to combat insurgency in Nigeria’s North-East.
The attack, which occurred at about 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2026, saw insurgents attempt to breach the defensive perimeter of the military formation. However, troops, led by the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, mounted a swift and decisive counteroffensive, engaged the attackers with superior firepower and forced them to retreat in disarray.
According to a statement issued by the Director Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, the insurgents abandoned their mission after encountering stiff resistance from the well-prepared troops, leaving behind evidence of their failed assault.
Military authorities described the attack as a sign of desperation by terrorist elements who have suffered significant setbacks in recent operations. They emphasized that the successful defence of the base highlights the high level of combat readiness, resilience, and operational effectiveness of troops under Operation HADIN KAI.
Despite the victory, the military confirmed that a number of soldiers lost their lives during the encounter. The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, paid tribute to the fallen troops, describing them as gallant heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the nation. He also extended condolences to their families and loved ones.
The Defence Headquarters urged the public and media to refrain from speculating or sharing unverified information, noting that details of casualties would be released only after the next of kin have been duly notified, in line with military tradition.
Meanwhile, clearance and follow-up operations are ongoing in the area to track down fleeing insurgents and prevent any attempt at regrouping. The Armed Forces reaffirmed their commitment, alongside other security agencies, to sustaining pressure on terrorist groups and restoring lasting peace in the North-East.
Citizens were also encouraged to remain calm, vigilant, and supportive by providing credible information that could assist ongoing military operations. Further updates, authorities said, would be communicated as necessary.
