Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, on Monday held high-level talks with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, in Ankara, as part of preparations for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s forthcoming State visit to Türkiye.
The meeting, which marked Tuggar’s first official visit to the country, focused on strengthening political, economic, security, and multilateral cooperation between Nigeria and Türkiye. Both sides explored ways to deepen diplomatic engagement and advance shared development priorities.
During the discussions, Minister Fidan commended Nigeria’s constructive role in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in West Africa, highlighting the country’s leadership within regional and continental frameworks.
Ambassador Tuggar emphasized the importance of expanding bilateral trade and increasing mutual investments, particularly in sectors of interest to Turkish companies such as construction, manufacturing, energy, and infrastructure. The ministers acknowledged the steady growth in economic relations and stressed the need to unlock further potential through structured public–private sector engagement.
On security matters, the two officials underscored opportunities to strengthen cooperation in military affairs and the defence industry, in line with mutual efforts to enhance national and regional security.
The visit reflected the growing strategic partnership between Nigeria and Türkiye, anchored on shared principles of sovereignty, institutional cooperation, and pragmatic engagement. Both sides expressed confidence in the prospects for deeper collaboration in the period ahead.
The talks formed part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to consolidate bilateral relations ahead of President Tinubu’s anticipated State visit, which is expected to further strengthen ties between the two nations.
