The Vice President of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, will lead the country’s delegation to the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80), which open on September 23, 2025, in New York, United States.
This year’s General Debate, themed “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights,” will highlight the global community’s resolve to foster peace, inclusivity, cooperation, and human rights while reaffirming the UN’s central role in addressing shared challenges.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement disclosed that Vice President Shettima will be accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and other senior government officials. Nigeria’s engagement at UNGA80 will focus on promoting sustained economic growth, strengthening peace and security, advancing human rights, coordinating humanitarian assistance, supporting justice and international law, commitment to disarmament, and enhancing cooperation against terrorism, drug control, and crime prevention.
The Vice President is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement on September 24, 2025, where he will emphasize the country’s contributions to international cooperation, regional stability, and climate change mitigation.
Nigeria will also participate actively in several high-level side events, including the International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia; a High-Level Roundtable on Energy, Oil & Gas, and Minerals in the Gulf of Guinea; and the Forward Africa Leaders Symposium 2025, hosted by the African Peer Review Mechanism, to discuss Africa’s digital transformation and AfCFTA’s digital trade framework.
The Ministry stressed that Nigeria’s presence at UNGA80 will further strengthen its commitment to multilateralism, international solidarity, and the accelerated achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
