It was with pomp and pageantry as the National Youth Service Corps rounded off its series of humanitarian services that marked the end of its forty five years anniversary celebrations.
The Jabi Motor park in Abuja, venue of the celebration was set agog by Corps Members and Staff of the Scheme as drivers, commuters and others residents benefited from free eye test, drug prescription and distribution of free eye glasses to the people with eye defects.
The ceremony also witnessed the clearing of refuse dump at the motor park.
NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Suleiman Kazaure, who was represented at the event by the Director, Community Development Service and Special Projects, Mr Steve Ehoda-Adi said the NYSC Scheme has succeeded in rendering selfless humanitarian services to the nation.
He added that as part of activities marking the celebration, all the 37 State Secretariats of the Scheme across the country had earlier engaged in various community development services such as sanitation, medical outreach, visits to hospitals and motherless babies homes as well as internally displaced persons (IDP) homes.
He said the success stories of the Scheme at forty-five include its Corps Manpower that have accelerated grassroots development and National growth.
Speaking further, General kazaure said the NYSC has through its posting policy, made immense contributions to National development through agriculture, banking, education, environmental protection, engineering, rural infrastructure among others.
“Since the Federal Government started involving Corps Members in the conduct of elections in 2011, Nigeria elections have gained more credibility than ever, as attested to by both local and international observers”.
“The NYSC has equally championed the successful execution of some Federal Government projects including national census, immunization campaign and campaign against HIV/AIDS which has made the Scheme a relevant instrument of National progress”, the DG added.
Brigadier General Kazaure said the Management of the Scheme will continue to leverage on its collaborations with local and international organisations to support government’s efforts at reducing the unemployment rate among Nigerian graduates.
The National Youth Service Corps was established on May 22nd, 1973, during the regime of General Yakubu Gowon (rtd).
