The Court of Appeal sitting in Ibadan has adjourned the hearing of the substantive appeals in the ongoing UI–ISI hijab case to Thursday, May 21, 2026.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by Amb. Mallam Ibrahim Agunbiade, General Secretary of the Oyo State chapter of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC).
Agunbiade explained that the substantive hearing could not proceed due to multiple pending applications before the appellate court in the various appeal files. He noted that the court heard arguments on all pending applications except the one filed by the 1st Respondent challenging the competence of the Notice and Brief of Argument submitted by the 5th and 6th Respondents.
According to him, the court directed that the application by the 1st Respondent would be taken alongside the substantive hearing of the appeals.
He added that the matter was consequently adjourned to Thursday, May 21, 2026, for the hearing of both the substantive appeals and the outstanding application.
Agunbiade reaffirmed MURIC’s confidence in the judicial process and reiterated the group’s commitment to defending the constitutional rights of willing Muslim students to practice their religion freely, including the use of hijab in educational institutions.
He also called on members of the Muslim Ummah and advocates of justice to remain peaceful, steadfast, and prayerful as the legal proceedings continue.
