The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday held high-level talks with the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard M. Mills Jr., as both countries moved to deepen diplomatic and democratic cooperation.
The meeting took place during a courtesy visit by the US envoy to the Senate President at the National Assembly in Abuja, where discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations and advancing shared democratic values.
According to a statement issued by Akpabio’s Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Anietie Ekong, the Senate President noted that Nigeria’s democratic system was modelled after that of the United States, stressing the importance of continued collaboration to nurture and preserve democracy.
Akpabio described the engagement as timely, noting that it provided an opportunity to review the state of Nigeria–US relations and explore areas of mutual interest. He congratulated the United States on its long-standing democratic history, while acknowledging Nigeria’s evolving democratic experience.
He also stated that both nations share common values, including a belief in democracy and faith, despite Nigeria’s ethnic and religious diversity.
In his remarks, Ambassador Mills said the visit was aimed at strengthening ties between Nigeria and the United States, adding that the US Mission was keen on supporting shared goals and gaining insight into the legislative agenda of the Nigerian Senate in the coming year.
The talks underscored the commitment of both countries to sustained dialogue and cooperation in promoting democratic governance and stronger bilateral relations.
