The Court of Appeal on Thursday affirmed the victory of Senator Monday Okpebholo in the September 21, 2024, governorship election in Edo State, bringing an end to the latest phase of legal tussles surrounding the election.
In a swift response, Governor Okpebholo called on the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Asue Ighodalo, to accept the court’s verdict and refrain from further abusing judicial processes. He emphasized the need for political actors to set aside differences and join hands to move Edo State forward.
The appellate court, in its judgment, upheld the earlier decision of the Election Petition Tribunal, which had validated Okpebholo’s election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The court held that the election was conducted in substantial compliance with the Electoral Act and reflected the will of Edo people.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo commended the judiciary for its commitment to justice and the rule of law. He described the ruling as not only a victory for the APC but also a win for democracy in Edo State.
“This ruling reaffirms the people’s mandate. It is time to move past political rivalry and focus on delivering good governance,” the Governor said.
He also urged Mr. Ighodalo—whom he described as “abandoned by his political godfather, Governor Godwin Obaseki”—to embrace the spirit of statesmanship and support efforts geared towards building a more prosperous Edo State.
Reiterating his administration’s “People First” agenda, Okpebholo pledged continued development across key sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, education, and economic empowerment. He called on all residents of the state to remain peaceful and law-abiding.
“The government remains committed to serving the best interests of every Edo resident. This affirmation of our mandate further energizes our resolve,” the statement concluded.
