The Director General, National Youth Service Corps Major General Shu’aibu Ibrahim has charged NYSC Inspectors to imbibe the higher ideals of the Scheme which will make them role models to Corps members.
He made this call while delivering an address to NYSC Inspectors nationwide at this year’s Inspectors’ Development Programme ( IDP) holding at Public Service Institute of Nigeria (PSIN) Abuja.
Represented by the Director, Planning, Research and statistics, Alh. Ahmed Wada Ikaka, the DG said as frontline officers interfacing directly with Corps members, Inspectors should internalise the ideals of selfless service, integrity, patriotism and commitment to the realisation of the Scheme’s objectives.
General Ibrahim posited that the theme of the IDP training “Optimising The Ideals Of The Scheme In The Present Realities: The role Of The NYSC Inspector” would reposition them to address the challenges of mentoring, monitoring and administration of Corps members under their care.
“it is expected that as image makers of the Scheme in the Local Government Areas, you will serve as role models and mentors to Corps members by performing your duties diligently and shunning acts capable of bringing the Scheme to disrepute”, he added.
The Director General noted that the NYSC Scheme was facing multifarious challenges of Corps population explosion, Corps rejection, Corps evasion of service, insecurity and more recently, the negative use of social media.
” As a dynamic Organisation, Management is intensifying liason with relevant Security Agencies and other critical stakeholders with a view to addressing security and other welfare needs of Corps members “, he said.
In an introductory address, the Director, Corps welfare and Health services Mr Benjamin Omotade commended the Director General for placing greater emphasis on continuous training and re-training of officers which resulted in organising the IDP for those who missed the initial trainings for one reason or another.
He further added that the training would expose Inspectors to the operations and implementation of the Scheme”s policies at the grassroots, especially as it regards welfare, security and implementation of the recently launched National Health Insurance Scheme for Corps members.
“In the course of the programme, participants will be asked to evaluate their level of participation and assimilation through syndicate discussions and plenary sessions on a variety of topics. All these are designed to build Inspectors’ confidence for optimal performance “, he said.
