Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has officially resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), SaharaReporters has confirmed. The governor tendered his resignation on Friday, alongside 21 members of the State Assembly, 8 members of the House of Representatives, and 44 Local Government Chairmen in Kano State.
In a letter to the Chairman of the Diso-Chiranchi Ward, NNPP, in Gwale Local Government Area, Yusuf cited persistent internal party challenges and growing disenfranchisement among members as reasons for his resignation. The governor emphasized that his decision was in the best interest of Kano State, expressed continued commitment to peace, unity, and progress.
The development followed Yusuf’s recent visit to the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he met with President Bola Tinubu. Sources suggested ongoing negotiations regarding Yusuf’s possible defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including his demands for a 2027 governorship ticket and ministerial nominations for the state requests that have reportedly caused tensions within the APC.
Reacting to the unfolding political drama, former Kano State Governor and Kwankwasiyya movement leader, Rabiu Kwankwaso, criticized alleged practices pressuring local officials to publicly declare political loyalty. Kwankwaso described such actions as unacceptable and divisive.
Political analysts said Yusuf’s resignation signaled a decisive break from his former party and set the stage for a major realignment in Kano State’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
