Students of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), have applauded the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, for awarding scholarships to 1,052 undergraduates drawn from the 13 local government areas of Kano North Senatorial District.
The scholarship scheme was formally launched on Tuesday at the Convocation Arena of BUK, where each beneficiary received ₦50,000 to support their academic pursuits across various fields of study.
The intervention come a day after another 1,000 students under Senator Barau’s undergraduate scholarship programme were matriculated at the Federal University Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State.
One of the beneficiaries, Rukayya Yusuf Adam, a 400-level student, expressed deep gratitude, noted that the senator has consistently supported students over the years.
“We are grateful for this. This is not the first time we are benefiting from Senator Barau’s scholarship. He has been supporting us consistently every year,” she said, while praying for the lawmaker.
The President of Kano North Students, BUK Chapter, Comrade Lawal Salisu Gwarzo, described Senator Barau as “the father of Nigerian students,” adding that because of his numerous educational interventions, students fondly call him “Mr Education.”
Representing Senator Barau at the event, his Chief of Staff, Professor Muhammad Ibn Abdullah, said the initiative reflected the senator’s strong commitment to educational development and youth empowerment.
In a statement issued by Senator Barau’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, the lawmaker assured that the scholarship scheme would not be limited to BUK students alone, but extended to all Kano North students studying in tertiary institutions across the country.
“Each of the students of BUK from Kano North Senatorial District will receive ₦50,000, courtesy of the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin. This gesture is not only for BUK students; every student from Kano North studying in Nigeria will benefit. The interventions of Senator Barau in the area of education cannot be overemphasised,” Mudashir said.
He further listed some of the senator’s recent interventions in education to include:
Sponsorship of 70 postgraduate students to study abroad.
Scholarships for 1,000 undergraduates at the Federal University Dutsin-Ma.
Scholarships for 300 doctoral students across Nigerian universities.
He urged the beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity by working hard and excelling in their academic pursuits.
