In a bid to revitalise sports and provide meaningful engagement for Nigerian youths, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, has sought the collaboration of the National Sports Commission (NSC) to host the prestigious African Volleyball Inter-Club Women’s Championship in Abuja.
During a courtesy visit to the NSC Chairman, Shehu Dikko, on Monday, 27 January 2025, CGC Adeniyi underscored the Nigeria Customs Service’s (NCS) commitment to using sports as a tool to promote national pride, foster unity, and create youth development opportunities.
He praised the NSC’s leadership, expressing confidence that Nigeria’s sporting renaissance is within reach under the current professional management. The championship, slated for 1 to 14 April 2025, is expected to draw top volleyball teams from across Africa, marking a significant step in Nigeria’s return to the global sports stage.
The NCS, in partnership with the Nigerian Volleyball Federation, has secured hosting rights for the tournament, with the support of the Nigerian Olympic Committee. CGC Adeniyi reiterated the Customs Service’s readiness to contribute to the success of the championship, ensuring that it would be a memorable event reflecting Nigeria’s growing stature in sports.
Responding, NSC Chairman, Malam Shehu Dikko, praised the initiative, noting the championship would not only showcase Nigeria’s athletic talent but also inspire the youth and demonstrate the country’s organisational prowess. He assured the full support of the Commission, including facilities, technical expertise, and logistics, to ensure a world-class event.
The President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Engr Habu Gumel, also commended CGC Adeniyi’s innovative approach, reinforcing the commitment to ensuring the tournament sets a benchmark for future sporting events in Nigeria.
